30 Minute Ballet Sketch

Again, this is where I ended up at the 30 minute mark.  I think this painting also, like the last has good possibilities.  I will post the results of these, as I finish them up this week.  The exhibition at the Grange was a success! It was a lot of fun, and I was able to meet new people, which is always great!
The next new venture on the horizon is that I will be painting with PAAC (plein air painters of colorado) in Taos New Mexico.   More news on that to come!

30 minute ballet sketch ~Janice Warriner

You can see I was not able to get as far as this one, since it is larger, 9 by 12 oil on canvas.  I have spent additional time on a sketch underneath the oils, but not much, maybe, 10 minutes. The paint application stopped at exactly 30 minutes. This one has a lot of good possibilities and I am going to pick it up again.

Quiet Talk, Angel Palette Knife Oil Painting by Judy Mackey

"Quiet Talk"
10" x  10", Oil on Board

I was looking at my recent inventory of paintings and was thinking,  "I sure have painted a few angel paintings lately".  I have been posting them on Facebook and it has been a pleasant surprise to receive comments and thumbs up on the paintings.  I think Facebook has it's place in seeing what is getting people's attention and what hasn't.

Yesterday I met Isabelle Gautier, a Georgia Artist who blogs on the Daily Painters of Georgia site.  We'd only "met" virtually through emails so it was nice to put a face to a name.  We visited a few Galleries and then had lunch at a French restaurant.  Isabelle is from the Normandy area of France so it was nice going to a French restaurant, ordering wine for lunch.  We talked about our art, ideas on galleries, what venues work for selling art, etc.  It was nice brainstorming and making a new friend.

Bathed In Light ~ J. Warriner

Another ballet painting! I have been timing myself to paint only 30 minutes per painting today.  I worked on  four different ballet paintings, and found it to be quite effective.  Why? not sure, maybe it was because I felt the need to get the important things down first, and not be, couldn't be concerned with any detail at all.  I'm going to do this exercise more often.  I am quite happy with the results.  Whe I spend more time on a painting, I begin getting "picky" and it begins to feel tight and contrived, everything opposite as to what I am trying to convey.  These ballet paintings are meant to be light and airy.  This painting is 9 by 12 oil on canvas panel, please visit my website at http://www.janicewarriner.com/

Emma's Pose

The warm light shining streaming through my windows, created a very dramatic effect on Emma in her ballet dress.  Because it is back lit, I was able to leave out face detail, and still look natural. This painting is 7 by 9 oil on canvas panel, please visit my website at http://www.janicewarriner.com/
Yesterday, I won a couple of ribbons at a local art show in Colorado, I placed 2nd and honorable mention, which is always a happy moment!

I like to suggest detail in a simplified way. Keep the brushwork loose for a fresh feel. And listening to Julee Cruise  while painting helps to create a mood.  (Remember her, from Twin Peaks?) Above all, remember, This is a journey.

Darn It's A Snow Day and I'm Alone - Palette Knife Painting by American Artist, Judy Mackey

"Darn It's a Snow Day and I'm Alone"
6" x  6", Oil on Board

So, last week we had 100 hours of below freezing temperatures here in North Texas!  So it started with a pair of feet sticking out of the bed sort of painting and when they started to announce school, businesses, and office closings, this little idea popped into my head....what if you had found yourself stuck in you house but didn't have anyone over that would have shared the snuggly moments in the morning, you'd be saying "Darn!"

Ardent - Palette Knife Oil Painting by Judy Mackey

"Ardent"
6 x 6 inches, Oil on Board
$90.00 - Available

I've been painting angels and angels and angels it seems and this one was going to be a study for another "couple angel".  I had it sketched with my brown pencil but I didn't quite like it....it sat around in my stack of 6 x 6 boards waiting it's fate.

So this afternoon as I was looking for another board to tone to get ready for more painting I grabbed this board and was going to wipe the pencil sketch off with some turpentine when I realized that the posture of the two was rather nice.   I outlined it with some brown paint and then the next bit was to put down red for the dress - suddenly it came alive.  I didn't want to mess with it and lose that "feeling"....because it was when I painted the red the word "Ardent" popped in my head.

This painting came together so quickly and I'm really pleased with it...I hope you will feel the same way too.

This was my first attempt at a nude drawing (except of course in college).  I was really pleased at the result.  It is mood provoking.  It also gave me a chance to draw which I feel I don't do enough of.  I think it's therapeutic and relaxing.
